Home charging continues to offer convenience for electric vehicle (EV) owners, but new data suggests declining satisfaction across key segments.
According to J.D. Power‘s 2025 US Electric Vehicle Experience (EVX) Home Charging Study, satisfaction with Level 2 portable charging stations dropped 21 points from last year, now scoring 714 on a 1,000-point scale. Level 2 permanently mounted chargers saw an 11-point decrease, down to 733. Level 1 chargers remain steady at 581.
These trends offer valuable insight for engineers and infrastructure planners. As public charging networks continue to face expansion challenges, the home charging experience remains central to overall EV satisfaction. Understanding the performance, connectivity, and usability concerns at home can help inform future product development and regional infrastructure decisions, particularly in areas where public charging is sparse.

Connectivity remains a challenge for Level 2 permanently mounted chargers, which report the highest satisfaction but also the most issues — 39 problems per 100 units, with 31% tied to Wi-Fi or app functionality.

Rising energy prices impact sentiment, especially in high-cost regions like the Northeast and West Coast. Satisfaction with the cost of home charging in these areas is significantly lower than in other regions.

Charging speed remains the most influential factor for customer satisfaction. Users reporting slower-than-expected charging speeds showed a 141-point drop in satisfaction, more than any other reported issue.

Signs of a slowdown in Level 2 charger adoption are emerging, particularly among newer EV model-year owners who appear to be using Level 1 chargers at increasing rates.
While this study examines the home charging experience of EV owners across all three charger segments, only the Level 2 permanently mounted charging station segment is award eligible this year. Tesla ranks highest among Level 2 permanently mounted charging stations for a fifth consecutive year, with a score of 776. Emporia (763) ranks second and Wallbox (756) ranks third.
The US Electric Vehicle Experience (EVX) Home Charging Study, now in its fifth year, is driven by a collaboration with PlugShare, the leading EV driver app maker and research firm.
This study sets the standard for benchmarking satisfaction with the critical attributes that affect the total or overall EV home charging experience for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).
Satisfaction is measured across eight factors: fairness of retail price; cord length; size of charger; ease of winding/storing cable; cost of charging; charging speed; ease of use; and reliability.
These factors provide a comprehensive assessment of the owner experience and charger performance. Respondents include 10,472 owners of 2019-2025 model year BEVs and PHEVs. The study was fielded from November 2024 through January 2025.
