CATL starts trial production at 100-GWh EV battery cell plant

By Michelle Froese | September 23, 2026

catl.com has started trial production of battery cells at its new manufacturing facility in Debrecen, Hungary, as it prepares the plant for series production.

The trial phase is focused on setting up, optimizing, and validating production equipment and manufacturing processes on the first two cell production lines. The work will be used to confirm process stability and manufacturing readiness before higher-volume production begins.

CATL has not disclosed the chemistry or format of the cells being produced during the trial. The company says the production lines are designed to accommodate different customer requirements and will supply automakers producing electric vehicles in Europe.

The Debrecen site has already been manufacturing battery modules since 2024, with more than 537,000 modules produced to date. Cell production adds another stage of battery manufacturing at the facility as CATL expands the site toward full-scale operation.

Once completed, the plant is expected to reach 100 GWh of annual battery production capacity, making it CATL’s largest manufacturing base outside China.
