Kalmar, a provider of sustainable material handling equipment, is partnering with Elonroad, a cleantech company specializing in automatic charging technology for heavy vehicles, to develop a 200-meter electric road at Kalmar’s Innovation Center in Ljungby, Sweden.
This electric road will let vehicles charge dynamically — while moving or stationary via embedded ground rails. The solution aims to reduce reliance on large onboard batteries, lower grid capacity requirements, and improve vehicle uptime.
The project received support from the Swedish Energy Agency and will first test a retrofitted Kalmar reachstacker and terminal tractor. The next phase will use the technology in a real-world port environment with pilot customers to further validate its performance.
“At the heart of this project is an innovative solution that combines Elonroad’s technology for automatic charging with Kalmar’s expertise in port and terminals, distribution centers, and industrial applications,” said Karin Ebbinghaus, CEO with Elonroad.
