Bidirectional power switch updated for EVs and charging infrastructure

By Michelle Froese | September 23, 2025

Ideal Power, developer of the B-TRAN bidirectional semiconductor power switch, has increased the published power rating of its discrete B-TRAN device from 50 to 75 amps.

Designed for use in electric vehicle (EV) contactors, charging infrastructure, and solid-state circuit breakers, the device is part of Ideal Power’s strategy to support emerging requirements in the EV and power management sectors. The updated product datasheet is available on the company’s website.

The higher rating is supported by extensive internal and third-party testing. While the published rating is now 75 amps, the device has been continuously tested at levels up to 150 amps, indicating an additional design margin. No changes were made to the product or packaging to achieve the higher rating.

The B-TRAN device enables true bidirectional switching with lower conduction and switching losses compared to conventional devices, making it well-suited for compact, power-dense designs.

Ideal Power’s SymCool module, built on the same dies, is offered in 1200V V/100 100A and 1200V /200A versions with double-sided cooling and integrated driver protection.

Both the discrete and module products are targeted for EV and EVSE systems where bidirectional operation and efficient thermal management are required. An increase in the SymCool power rating is expected later this year.
