Battery pack optimized for heavy-duty electric trucks

By Michelle Froese | April 25, 2025

Proterra Powered LLC, an innovator in commercial vehicle electrification technology, announced the debut of its H2-23 battery pack as part of its Onyx Strata series. Engineered for Class 8 trucks and other demanding commercial applications, the new form factor expands Proterra’s reliable battery technology portfolio, setting performance benchmarks in heavy-duty transportation electrification.

The H2-23 battery pack is Proterra’s most energy-dense battery pack, with a gravimetric density of 176 Wh/kg and a volumetric density of 270 Wh/L. It enables a 750-kWh energy system for Class 8 applications and up to 2 MWh of total system energy.

Engineered to power and transform heavy-duty trucks, it optimizes range, durability, and performance. In addition, the H2-23 battery pack comes with software compliant with SAE J1939 and ISO 26262, enhanced with improved security features.

Designed to exceed the industry’s most rigorous safety standards, the H2-23 underscores Proterra’s commitment to sustainability, American innovation, and advanced manufacturing at scale.

This new battery technology will debut at the ACT Expo next week. Throughout the show, multiple OEM vehicles and booths will showcase it, giving attendees a firsthand look at our latest innovation.

Alongside the H2-23 launch, Proterra is unveiling the Proterra Onyx Series that will include its H- and S-Series platforms.

  • Onyx Slate: Single-layer battery configurations optimized for longer, larger commercial vehicles, offering flexible installation below or within frame rails, as well as roof-mounted options.

  • Onyx Strata: Compact battery configurations designed to maximize energy storage in tight spaces, seamlessly integrating into both on- and off-highway applications.

With the H2-23 and the Onyx Series, Proterra continues to set new benchmarks in sustainable, high-performance energy solutions, ensuring commercial vehicles can transition to zero emissions without sacrificing power, efficiency, or durability.
