ChargePoint, a provider of networked charging solutions for electric vehicles (EVs), announced two innovative solutions to combat charger vandalism, featuring a new cut-resistant charging cable and ChargePoint Protect, an alarm system designed to increase charging station security.
One solution is the industry’s first cut-resistant charging cable, which addresses cable theft and vandalism. Using innovative cut-resistant materials, the cable is engineered to be significantly harder to cut while remaining flexible and easy to handle for drivers.
ChargePoint plans to make these cables available for all its commercial and fleet charging stations, with the option to license the design to other manufacturers by mid-2025. This initiative aims to enhance the durability and reliability of EV charging stations industry-wide.
Secondly, ChargePoint has introduced ChargePoint Protect, an integrated charger alarm system designed to improve charging station security. It uses existing charger speakers, screens, and lighting systems to detect cable tampering in real time and automatically activate an alarm to deter vandalism. The system also notifies station owners via SMS or email when an alarm is triggered, enabling quicker responses.
ChargePoint Protect will be available starting this month through a cloud-based software upgrade on select charging station models, with no additional cost for existing ChargePoint customers. The company expects these two new solutions, when combined, will benefit charging station owners by reducing station repair costs associated with vandalism and EV drivers by ensuring they can trust charging stations to work when and where they need them.
