AI-powered platform launches to support grid modernization

By Michelle Froese | March 26, 2025

Schneider Electric, the global provider of digital transformation of energy management and automation, has announced the launch of its One Digital Grid Platform, an integrated and AI-powered solution designed to enhance grid resiliency, reliability, and efficiency.

This platform provides the data and technical foundation to integrate independent software solutions, enabling utilities to accelerate grid modernization and deliver cleaner, more affordable energy while benefitting from lower total cost of ownership.

As utilities face the growing impact of distributed energy resources (DERs) — including electric vehicle (EV) charging and battery storage — modernizing grid operations becomes critical to ensure stability and scalability. The One Digital Grid Platform provides an interoperable ecosystem for integrating these technologies, helping utilities respond to growing electricity demand, more extreme weather events, and the evolving energy landscape.

Many utilities continue to rely on legacy grid systems that lack the automation, scalability, and integration capabilities required to manage today’s increasingly complex energy flows. Schneider Electric’s new platform addresses these challenges by enabling real-time insights, predictive analytics, and automation to drive efficiency and resilience across the grid. It can reduce outages by up to 40%, decrease DER interconnection timelines by 25%, and cut application deployment time by 60%.

The platform will be available to utilities later this year for immediate implementation.

A holistic approach to grid modernization

The One Digital Grid Platform is built on an innovative hybrid cloud architecture and addresses three core utility use cases:

  • Grid planning and asset management – Optimizes infrastructure investments by integrating design, validation, and data management tools to enhance long-term grid reliability and reduce costs.

  • Grid operations and resiliency – Enables operational awareness and predictive risk management using integrated third-party data and first-party analytics. Partnerships with solution providers like AiDASH improve disaster response and grid flexibility during extreme weather events.

  • Grid flexibility and customer engagement – Enhances DER integration and supports more dynamic, consumer-driven energy models. The platform supports interoperability with customer engagement solutions such as Uplight to streamline user interactions.

Built on Microsoft Azure, the platform enables seamless, end-to-end connectivity and interoperability with external systems. It includes robust cybersecurity measures to safeguard critical infrastructure and features plug-and-play integration for faster deployment of new technologies.

Modernizing protection and control infrastructure

Schneider Electric is also advancing grid control technology with updates to its PowerLogic product line:

  • PowerLogic P7 – A dual-capability relay platform that can be used as traditional embedded hardware or as a software-defined solution. It integrates with merging units, controllers, and bay control units, with a design that emphasizes cybersecurity and future-proof operations.

  • PowerLogic T500 – A modular platform for substation automation, functioning as a remote terminal unit, data concentrator, and communications processor. The T500 is engineered for flexibility and cybersecurity, supporting evolving operational technology needs.

Schneider Electric continues to partner with industry leaders like Microsoft, Esri, and Uplight to drive innovation in automated grid intelligence, situational awareness, and customer engagement. These strategic collaborations help deliver more responsive and resilient grid systems, positioning utilities to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving energy ecosystem.
