TIER IV and Renesas Electronics are collaborating on an open AI computing platform for software-defined vehicles (SDVs), combining TIER IV’s Autoware autonomous-driving software and reference AI models with Renesas’ R-Car Gen 5 automotive system-on-chips (SoCs).
The companies plan to develop a scalable hardware and software platform supporting applications from Level 2+/2++ advanced driver-assistance systems through Level 4 autonomous driving.
TIER IV will adopt R-Car Gen 5 as one of its primary reference computing platforms for Autoware and future AI-based autonomous-driving technologies. The company will port and optimize Autoware for R-Car Gen 5 and plans to deploy its end-to-end autonomous-driving AI models on the platform.
The collaboration is intended to combine conventional autonomous-driving software and AI-based driving models on a common automotive computing architecture for automakers and Tier 1 suppliers.
TIER IV is also developing AI accelerators for transformer-based autonomous-driving models and sensing technologies that include LiDAR and 4D radar.
The companies plan to demonstrate Autoware and TIER IV’s reference AI models running on the Renesas R-Car X5H at Automotive World 2026, taking place September 9 to 11 in Tokyo. The demonstration will show the autonomous-driving software and AI models operating on the automotive computing platform.
